FDA chickened out and will not require graphic images on cigarettes

Honestly, I’ ma little sad to hear this news.  (I’m not a smoker but I do like to hang out with smokers during break time.  We all know that’s where things really get done).  I love to bring this up during smoke time to hear the reactions of everyone.  Other than a few squeamish girls, the  response was always, “eh”.  It’s just pictures of things that may or may not happen to me but they still hold the sweet goodness of nicotine so put a dead baby seal on there for all I care.  I’m buying them.  Of course, when they get to ten dollars a pack maybe…no, still buying them then too.

The Department of Justice has sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner saying it will not ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review a federal appeals court ruling that blocked new graphic warnings on cigarette packages.

The government had until April 5 to appeal the ruling, which struck down the mandate, saying the requirements were a violation of free speech protections.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration instead will “undertake research to support a new rule-making consistent with the Tobacco Control Act,” the FDA said in a written statement, meaning the agency will have to create new warning labels to comply with the 2009 law.
